Mike was a product of Enfield High School and Kilburn but he was tied to Woodville Football Club under the curious zoning rules of the SANFL at the time. He played 63 games for the Peckers before being cleared to play for the Roosters in 1976.
He played mainly as key forward at Woodville and he commenced as a forward when he came to North. He had some impact as a forward in his first season at North, scoring 26 goals in 10 games including bags of 5 goals in games against Glenelg and South Adelaide.
In 1977 Mike was moved into the ruck and his career blossomed. Unfortunately after playing some fine games early in the season his year was curtailed by injury. 1978 was a poor year for the Roosters with the team winning its first wooden spoon in 66 years but it was through no fault of Mike. He played 17 games in the ruck, polled 8 Magarey Medal votes and finished third in North’s League Best and Fairest.
Mike’s form was arguably even better at the start of 1979. After a couple of losses, North went on a four game winning run, beating Glenelg at Glenelg, West at Richmond, Norwood at the Parade and Port at Prospect with Mike and a young Mick Redden dominating in ruck and changing at full forward. The following match was against Sturt at Unley and for the first quarter and a half Mike was clearly best man on the ground. Then disaster struck. In a seemingly innocuous incident Mike’s knee buckled and North’s 1979 chances disappeared in that instant. The irony of the injury is that many fine judges thought that Mike should not have been playing in that game but he should have been resting, waiting to play for the state side on the following Monday given his recent form against the state’s best ruckmen.
Mike missed the rest of 1979 and North, without him missed the finals on percentage. He returned to play 15 games and scoring 11 goals in 1980 and played one game in 1981, before retiring from league football. He played a total of 59 games for North and scored 60 goals.
Mike was known as a loveable larrikin who would look after his teammates, both on and off the field. He passed away in September 2020.
