Jeff Pash was always destined to represent North. He was born and bred in Prospect and his two uncles, Norm and “Araby” Pash, had played for over ten years for North at the turn of the last century.

Jeff captained the State Amateur League team whilst representing Teachers College before he was recruited to North Adelaide. He won North’s Best and Fairest award in his first year of League football in 1938 and went even better in 1939, adding the Magarey Medal to another NAFC Best and Fairest in only his second year of league football.

Jeff’s football career was hampered through being posted to teach in Port Augusta, although he did find the time to play in the 1944 Norwood-North premiership side. When the full competition resumed he recommenced with North, captaining the Club in 1945 and playing league until 1948 when his career appeared over. He spent most of 1948 in the Second eighteens, although his form was good enough to win the Best and Fairest in that grade.

Ken Farmer was appointed coach in 1949 and luckily talked Jeff into playing one more season. North won the premiership that year and in the Grand Final many scribes thought that Jeff was best player on the ground. That winning Grand Final was Jeff’s last match as he had announced his retirement prior to the teams running out onto the ground. Thus Jeff retired with a Magarey Medal, two Best and Fairest awards, 137 League Games, 4 state games and best of all a League premiership.

Retirement from football led to another career in football. From 1950 until 1964, Jeff wrote a weekly column for “The News”.  His style of writing and intimate knowledge of the game made his column compulsory reading for all football supporters.  His writings were edited into a book titled The Pash Papers, released in 1999.

Away from football Jeff had a parallel outstanding career as a highly regarded and well-respected teacher with the Education Department.  After teaching at various schools including Port Augusta and Adelaide Boys High School, Jeff was promoted to Inspector of Schools in 1963.  He retired in 1980.

In 2000 Jeff was named in North Adelaide’s star studded “Team Of The Century” and was awarded the Sports Medal 2000 from the Commonwealth Government.  He was a life member of both North Adelaide and the SANFL.

Recognised universally as one of the finest gentlemen to play the game, Jeff followed his beloved North Adelaide until his final days.

Jeff Pash, died on Friday, 22 April 2005. He was 88 years of age.
