In Jamie’s youth he lived in Walkerville on the “Terrace”, 300 metres from Walkerville Oval. He also attended Walkerville Primary School. From an early age he was a keen sportsman and enjoyed football, cricket and athletics.

In 1954 he Captained the South Australian Primary Schools Amateur Sports Association cricket team in the Australian Schoolboys Carnival in Adelaide and in 1962 he represented SA in the SA Amateur Football League team at the MCG, and from there was selected in the All Australian Amateur Team and played a game against the ACT at Manuka Oval.

in 1963 after his selection in the All Australian Amateur team, Jamie was invited to join North Adelaide by Don Lindner and came into the League team amongst a batch of eight first year players playing under Don as coach.

In the 1963 Annual Report it stated “although not quite as spectacular as some, the selectors thought him good enough to put him in for 19 matches. A close checker, an honest trier, courageous, and a good mark and kick, Jamie is another player who will be a force in the future.”

How right that proved to be. Jamie was a solid performer from 1963 until 1971 and an important contributor to the North Adelaide team across those years - known for his reliability, sound skills, with good anticipation and safe hands his principal assets.

While nearing the end of his career in 1971, Jamie did manage to play four league games in what was to be our premiership season. A truly dedicated North clubman, he played 124 games for the League team and played in the seconds premiership team in 1965. He won the Best Club Man award in 1963, Best/Most Effective Backman in 1964, 1966 and 1967, Best Placed Man in 1968 and 1969 and an Appreciative Club Service award in 1965.

In 1969, during his playing days at North Adelaide, Jamie won the 120m Ballarat Gift and Cousin Jack Gift at Wallaroo.

He retired with the unenviable record of having never kicked a goal! In 1972 Jamie was awarded Life Membership of the Club for his valuable services rendered over their many long years.

Jamie’s contribution and dedication to North Adelaide did not end with his retirement as a player. He continued his involvement, taking on a variety of roles over many years including

• Club Runner for several seasons

• Selector – and later Chairman of Selectors for many years

• Roosters Reward Group member

• Chairman, Recruiting and Zone Committee

• Club President and Chairman of the Board of Directors

• President’s Group member and later the Group’s President

• A member of various Committee of Management sub-committees

• S.A.N.F.L. Director

• General Manager and Chief Executive Officer NAFC

Post-Roosters, Jamie spent 17 years as a SA Football Commissioner, 5 years as SANFL Deputy Chair and 5 years as SANFL Vice President. He then spent 2 ½ years as an inaugural Board Member for the Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority and was present in 2009 when the MOU was put together with SACA and the AFL in Melbourne’s Crown Casino to redevelop the Adelaide Oval.

During his term as NAFC President he had the satisfaction of being involved in a great era for the Club that included 5 Grand Finals and 2 Premierships. Over 38 years Jamie has been a genuinely great contributor to and custodian of the North Adelaide Football Club and the SANFL.
