John Blunden commenced with the Club in the Junior Colts in 1947 and was named as Captain of the Senior Colts in 1948.  He was a member of premiership sides in both of those years.  In 1949 John was promoted to the league side as a defender early in the season and held his place to become a premiership player in his first year of league football.  Three premierships in three different grades in three years is an amazing and possibly unique record.

At the end of 1949 John was awarded the “Most Improved Trophy” and the Annual Report noted that “His steadiness and courage in the final series were factors in our success”.

He was awarded the “Best Backman” in 1950 and “Sound Defensive Play” in 1951, the same year that he represented South Australia in a state game.  In 1952 he played in his second League Premiership when North thrashed Norwood by 108 points in the Grand Final.  The Annual Report this time described John as “Elegant, unhurried and possessing superb judgement” and he was awarded a “Serviceable Play” Trophy.

For a number of years from 1951 onwards John was beset with injury and thus spent some time recovering in the Second Eighteens.  Such was his class though, that he won the 1953 Second Eighteens Magarey Medal as well as winning the Club’s Second Eighteens Most Consistent.  In 1955 he won the Seconds Best Placed Man before resuming his role as a league regular in 1956.

His form at League level was so good that he won consecutive NAFC Best and Fairest Awards in 1956 and 1957.  He was named in the Advertiser Team of The Year in 1957.

John’s final year was 1958, a season in which North were very strong but suffered numerous injuries at the wrong time.  John was awarded the “Serviceable Play” Trophy and retired having played 141 Club games and one State game.

But that was only part of John’s wonderful service to the club.  He spent 9 years on the Club’s Management Committee, 5 years as a league selector, was Senior Vice President in North’s 1971 Premiership Year and had the honour of being Club President in the 1972 Premiership and Champions of Australia year.  John remained Club President until 1975.

In addition to the above, John undertook the roles of Delegate to the SANFL in 1974-75, founding member of the North Adelaide Footballer’s Club in 1965 and President/Chairman of The Roosters Club from 1968 to 1972.  He was awarded NAFC Life Membership in 1959, SANFL Life Membership in 1959 and Roosters Club Life Membership in 1973.

While in the role of President he was also involved in various sub-committees (many as Chairman) including Recruiting, Prospect Oval Planning, Property and Building, Executive, Zone and Match committees.

He was a member of the NAFC Hall of Fame Selection Committee from 2015 where his knowledge and sound judgement were invaluable.

The North Adelaide Football Club salutes a wonderful servant and remembers him as a true gentleman who dedicated much of his life to the club
